'a decisive moment?' by clive
rowley

Henri Cartier-Bresson
conjured the photographic term "the decisive moment" and it usually referred to
the moment when people in his photographs were 'just right' or 'doing the right
thing', so to speak. There are no people in this photograph of the magnificent
vaulted cellarium at the 12th century Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire. Perhaps a
couple of Cistercian Monks might have been appropriate, but not the tourists who
were there on August Bank Holiday Sunday five years ago. So this is, in a
sense, a decisive moment in reverse - the shot had to be taken when, for a
moment, there were no visitors around.
