'defiance' by alan brown

I discovered this secluded beach some
years ago while on holiday in Spain. I had photographed the scene before but on
this particular visit it was blowing a gale as can be seen by the spindrift
flying from the wave tops.
The heavy storm clouds out to sea had
made the horizon as dark as night and, sure enough a few minutes after taking
this shot the rain came lashing down and I had to beat a hasty retreat to the
shelter of my hired car. It has always puzzled me how these two trees manage to
survive, growing in such close proximity to the sea with salt water lapping
around their roots.
When I entered the print in a
competition a couple of years ago I remember the judge saying “ It’s a very nice
print but, I wish the author would have removed the large stick in the
foreground, it’s distracting”. I didn’t agree with his comment at the time, and
still don’t. I had included it purposely as I think it provides a certain
balance to the composition. Besides, the ‘large stick’ is a length of heavy
armoured cable well and truly buried in the sand.
Nikon F3, 24mm lens, Kodak I.R. film
rated at 800 asa, no filtration applied.
