Chalk Chimneys by Alan Brown
.
Just outside the town of Rojales in Southern
Spain is a small range of chalk hills. A section of one hill has been dug out
into a maze of caves and passageways which are now inhabited by a colony of
artists and crafts people who produce a wide range of works. They have an
electricity supply in the caves to provide light and the heating (when
necessary) is via small wood-burning stove pots, hence the chimneys at the
surface.
On this occasion the caves had been opened to
the public for what was the Spanish version of a craft fair to display and sell
their wares. I had spent quite a while wandering the passages and the
surrounding hill sides and I was particularly fascinated by the ever changing
cloud formations passing overhead in an otherwise clear blue sky.
