Photographic Essay:
'Limbo'
clive rowley
Modern UK city centres are often glitzy and
vibrant. Clive Rowley's nearest city is Stoke-on-Trent and just beyond the city
centre at Hanley is another city - where buildings and areas have become
dilapidated and here are seen the remnants of a sometimes glorious past. But
decay has taken over, and it is as if these buildings are in limbo, awaiting
restoration or demolition. City churches and Pubs seemed to have suffered most:
worship is now restricted to the few, and old fashioned public houses seem to
have given up trying to compete with the large themed drinking emporiums which
are the fashion of the day. These areas are now the haunts of drug addicts,
vandals, fly-posters and graffiti artists. These twelve photographs reflect on
the sad side of a 21st century city.

The top 4 images are all taken of the rear and
sides of Bethesda Chapel: the 'Cathedral of the Potteries' which featured in the
recent BBC2 programmes called 'Restoration' and polled the fourth largest vote
nationwide to have its restoration funded. Only the winner, however, will be
funded but attempts are being made to save the church.
